Our Story

Three Decades of Engineering Excellence

The origins of FSD trace back to the Bailey Meters & Controls factory at 218 Purley Way, Croydon. In the late 1970s, the company was taken over by Babcock International and the site became home to Bristol Babcock Limited (BBL), a market-leading process automation contractor working across sectors worldwide.

BBL were heavily involved in the C&I design and installation solutions at Heysham II and Torness nuclear power stations in the 1980s. The company was later acquired by the FKI group and subsequently became part of Emerson Process Management.

In 1994, the Field Services Department of BBL completed a management buyout to form Field Systems Designs Limited. From that foundation, FSD has grown into a specialist mechanical and electrical engineering contractor with nationwide coverage.

In 2012, the Group acquired Tom Finney Services Ltd (TFS), consolidating capabilities in fire, intruder, CCTV and lightning protection installation. That same year, FSD Mech was established to supplement FSD’s existing electrical capabilities, offering a complete pipework supply and installation service.

FSD Electrical Services (FSDe) were re-established in 2017 to provide telemetry, control and automation solutions.

Today, FSD still retain a number of staff involved in those early projects and have developed the team and skills to operate as a respected solution provider across critical UK infrastructure.
