Challenge

Basingstoke STW has been designated an SBI (Site of Biodiversity Interest) by Thames Water.

The C725 AMP 6 Basingstoke THP project was to provide advanced digestion sludge treatment by the introduction of a new thermal hydrolysis process (THP) and associated ancillary processes.

These processes produced bio gas to be utilised by combined heat and power (CHP) gas fired generating sets to generate electricity which would be used to provide electrical supplies to the existing Basingstoke STW and the new THP parasitic loads.

The programme was driven by the need to achieve ROCs accreditation of the engines by March 2017. Ideally this meant that all plant would be up and running; the site would be receiving and processing sludge imports, the THP would be in operation and digesters producing the gas required to run the engines.

Scope

The electrical scope included:

  • Detailed design of the electrical installation works associated with the THP Process
  • Determining finalised cable routes
  • Cable calculations to determine cable type, rating and cable installation method
  • Power, control, intertripping, interlocking, instrumentation and communication network
  • cabling
  • Cable containment and support systems
  • Local field mounted isolation switches, emergency stop pushbuttons, junction boxes
  • and marshalling terminal boxes
  • Installation of free issued instruments
  • Fabricated steel MCC support frame for THPMCC1, THPMCC2, THPMCC3 and the
  • PMS Control Panel
  • Welfare Building lighting, emergency lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire
  • detection/alarm system and small power building service items
  • Road lighting
  • Task lighting
  • 110 volt socket outlets

The mechanical scope included:

  • The design, fabrication and installation of all pipework all fittings and ancillary accessories, rodding points, air relief vents, sample points, tappings for instrumentation and any other connection on all pipework, as required to provide a complete installation.

Solution

FSD were awarded the M&E cabling and pipework installation. Achieving this, over 50,000m of cable & 6,000m of above-ground pipework were installed by FSD.

Outcome

All items of plant to be provided as part of this subcontract have been designed for a useful operational life of 20 years.
